Kelly's Tap Class

Kelly’s tap class focuses on various different styles of tap such as the Broadway style: Producers, 42nd Street, Radio City Music Hall Rockettes right down to the crazy rhythms and edgy beats of hoofing creating your own sounds and steps. In her class Kelly stresses the importance of having your fundamentals down before racing ahead to tap faster. Her class focuses on building the basics, the ability to work on listening and strengthening footwork. Vocabulary is something Kelly stresses a great deal making sure the students know what the steps are called and the quality in which they perform them. Kelly’s different styles of tap have been greatly influenced and inspired by such people as Gene Kelly, Ann Miller, Henry LeTang, Gregory Hines

Kelly's jazz/lyrical class

Kelly’s class begins with an intensive 50-minute warm-up that stresses the importance of having the students immediately connect to all the movements and not just see it as a mindless warm-up. She uses the Graham/Horton technique designed to strengthen and lengthen the dancer, followed by a semi-center ballet barre and isolations. She also leads the dancers with some across-the-floor basics that allow them to focus on the basics: perfecting their turns, travels and jumps. She then ends with floor stretches and a final boot camp of sit-ups and push-ups. Kelly aims to have her students feel strengthened and lengthened when leaving class while also having been able to work on their technique. While doing this, Kelly’s class also focuses making sure the students don’t just dance the choreography, but come from a performance aspect and connect to the movement as one whole motion and emotion, bringing the choreography to life for themselves and making it their own.
